Nalbinding (or Nalebinding) meaning "binding with a needle" or "needle-binding" is popular in Scandinavian countries and used by the vikings! It's said to predate both knitting & crocheting. Hollys mittens were made freeform making the shape / size of the mittens to her hand as she went.
